Memoirs of a Prisoner of Żabikowo

Aleksandra Markwitz-Bielerzewska’s memoirs offer an account of the times of the German occupation, documenting the personal experiences of the author and her fellow inmates. All the characters mentioned in the book are authentic, as are the events and situations in which she participated as an eyewitness. As she begins her story, she becomes a “witness of the time”—one of the many women whose youth was stigmatised by the period of occupation.
