Wersja anglojęzyczna publikacji „Aleksandra Markwitz-Bielerzewska. Memoirs of a Prisoner of Żabikowo”

Muzeum Martyrologiczne w Żabikowie published an English translation of memoires of the Aleksandra Markwitz-Bielerzewska (1919-2007), prisoner of Żabikowo camp.

Book is based on Aleksandra Markwitz-Bielerzewska post war account Przetrwanie było naszą życiową dewizą (Survival Was Our Life’s Motto).

Her memoirs are giving an inside look of the German occupation, documenting personal experiences of both herself and her fellow prisoners. Every person and situation mentioned in the book is an authentic one as well as all events which Bielerzewska was an eyewitness.

As she writes in the book: „No book, no film, no story—not even those created by us who lived through these terrible things—can convey the scenes we saw, everything we experienced.  […] Someone who was not there with us, who did not see what we saw or experience what we experienced, will never understand us. To an outsider, our account will sound like some tragic sensation—and often they will not believe what we say. Sometimes they sympathise, but in a moment, preoccupied with everyday life, they forget. And this is natural. But this accursed nightmare lingers within us for the rest of our lives.”

Thanks to this publication every person interested in the period of the German occupation of Wielkopolska will have an opportunity to expand its knowledge of the Żabikowo camp history.
